Cracked.com has listed their 11 favorite unintentionally gay rap lyrics:
With all of the negative press surrounding hip-hop music, rappers often complain about the media taking their lyrics out of context, to make them seem more violent or misogynistic than they really are.
As a journalistic institution built on a foundation of honesty and integrity, we would never stoop to such lows. But take those lyrics out of context to make them sound gay? We’re on it.
Our favorite? Jay-Z featuring Memphis Bleek: “Hey fella, I’ve had my eye on you for awhile, I like how you look in those baggy jeans. Let’s go park somewhere and have sex. I’ll even pay you!”

MP3: Alibi Tom- Fire from Scrapbook (May 4th, Leon)
Alibi Tom kicks off this week’s Smorgasbord with highly danceable indie rock. Their catchy pop instincts come straight out of Sweden.
MP3: French Kicks- Abandon from Swimming (Out now, iTunes. In stores May 20th via Vagrant)
From one set of hand claps to another… The French Kicks use ‘em to launch into a drifting psych pop version of their signature post-punk sound. Melodic and moody.
MP3: The Coast- Nueva York from Expatriate (Out now, Aporia Records)
These Canadians take a straightforward piano ballad and build on it with shimmering guitars. The balance works to add interest to radio-ready pop melodies without seeming like an afterthought.
MP3: My Morning Jacket- Evil Urges from Evil Urges (June 10th, ATO)
The internet has spoken. After live versions of their new tunes showed up online, the Southern psych rockers have made this track available from their next release. A little electronica mixed in with some ripping, dueling guitars towards the latter half of the song.
MP3: The Instruments- Ode to the Sea from Dark Smaland (May 13th, Orange Twin)
Repetitive experimental folk of the Elephant 6 variety. Hey, there’s even a Jeff Mangum cameo.
And now for this week¹s Smorgasbord Sundae Wafer…
MP3: Speck Mountain- Stockholm from Summer Above (Out now, Burnt Brown Sounds)
Chicago’s Speck Mountain closes us out this week with some gorgeous dream pop. Mazzy Star fans will love these locals who are performing next Tuesday, April 29th at Empty Bottle.

Oh, Moby…Heard mixed reviews of his performances at SXSW (I wasn’t able to catch one myself), but tonight is a fantastic opportunity to judge for yourself when the iconic electronic artist hits the decks at Wrigleyville’s most famed and shamed club, Smartbar.
From the press release:
Moby – one of the pioneering musicians of the last 20 years – will perform a DJ set with DFA Associates Holy Ghost!, Justin Miller and Jacques Renault at a free MySpace Secret Show , Tuesday, April 22 at Smart Bar in Chicago. The show starts at 9 PM.
Moby recently released his latest album Last Night on April 1, through Mute Records. Alternating between hands-in-the-air anthems, old school hip-hop and end-of-the-night ambience, Last Night is a dance music tour de force that looks back at Moby’s deep roots in the club scene while simultaneously embracing the future.
I’m not sure how much ‘embracing of the future’ I’ll personally be doing, but I know I’ll probably dance. Who’s joining me?

Some of you more regular readers will note that I’ve posted Scotland Yard Gospel Choir’s “Aspidistra” a couple of times in the past month, as they’re in the midst of their Schubas Practice Space Residency. Each month, a buzzworthy band with Chicago ties is invited to curate 4 Monday night shows in a month. It’s an opportunity to try new material or arrangements and to invite special guests to perform or lend a hand.
Though their self-titled full length was release last October on Bloodshot Records and the group has toured extensively since then, this month’s residency may be SYGC’s coming out party around here. Though the band revolves tightly around Welsh-born leader Elia and a few key players, live shows in Chicago are generally a gathering of the who’s-who of the city’s independent music scene. Sally Timms of the Mekons is a frequent contributor, along with members of Bright Eyes’ touring band and Windy City folk heroes Kelly Hogan and Nora O’Connor. It’s no wonder that the result is a scrappy blend of hook-laden folk rock and cheeky, irresistible chamber pop. Horns and strings are a given, as are Elia’s and pixieish guitarist Mary Ralph’s ocaasional zero-to-sixty propulsion of the pretty songs from bedroom twee to bona fide folk-pop-punk. It’s like if Jens Lekman and Richard Hawley took a bunch of speed and flipped out early Minor Threat…but like, with trumpets.
They’re versatile, they’re prolific, and they’re all ours for the time being. Hey world, come and get Scotland Yard Gospel Choir before we eat ‘em totally up.
