Whoever said “life is a marathon, not a sprint” was clearly not a Tokyo Police Club fan. The boys from Newmarket, Ontario blast through 11 songs in just 28 minutes on their first full-length offering, Elephant Shell, out on Saddle Creek April 22. Setting land-speed records for smart post pop-punk is business as usual for this foursome, and Elephant Shell does nothing to displace these youngsters from their indie darling perch. Unfortunately, it also does nothing to displace these youngsters from their indie darling perch – though accessible, engaging, and full of the same irresistible hooks and whip smart lyrics from leader David Monks, the album breaks no new ground and establishes no new direction for the band.
We’ll have to spare them the “sophomore slump” tag since this is technically their first stab at a proper album, but Elephant Shell is just recycling a proven formula. Luckily for TPC, that formula is still catchy as hell.

This album thoroughly bores me, and I am a fan of their EP and an even bigger fan of their live show.
