Wednesday Smörgåsbord

March 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Whew, two Smörgåsbords in 5 days!

MP3: Peter Moren- Social Competence from The Last Tycoon (April 8th, Touch & Go)
Pop, women, and handclaps. As one third of Peter Bjorn and John, Peter Moren’s instantly recognizable croon likens John Lennon.

MP3: Sound of Arrows- Danger! from Danger! EP (May 7th, Labrador)
Continuing with the Swedish pop theme, this duo goes for a more glitch-sample sound. After teasing us next month with their EP, a full-length is scheduled for release in the fall.

MP3: Same Difference- Stepsonday from Little Light (June 3rd, One Eleven Records)
Please kill me if that song gets played again producer, Nick Rucker (Yellowcard, Plain White Ts), guides the knobs for this Californian sibling pairing. Hard to ruin a solid, Smoking Popes-esque power pop tune.

MP3: Shearwater- Rooks from Rook (June 3rd, Matador)
Dark, pensive falsetto in the key of drama. A fun fact (if it doesn’t become obvious during the track): frontman Jonathan Meiburg is mildly obsessed with birds. Everyone’s got to have a day job.

MP3: Neva Dinova- Clouds from You May Already Be Dreaming (April 8th, Saddle Creek)
Omahans do it better. 3 guitarists formulate slowcore and psych-rock textures to create aural beauty.

And now for this week’s Smorgasbord Sundae Wafer…

MP3: Bottomless Pit- The Cardinal Movements from Hammer of the Gods (November 2007, Comedy Minus One)
Hopefully you’ve already up to speed with this local, melancholic post-rock outfit. Their songs contain elements of the sound that drew us into the Chicago rock scene of the 90s. Two parts Silkworm, one part Seam will do that. Catch them opening for Monotonix on Friday March 28th @ The Empty Bottle.
