The Chicago Sun-Times much-ballyhooed, much-beleaguered pop music critic Jim DeRogatis posted his list of the Top Ten up-and-coming bands in Chicago today. What better way to spend the morning than peeping his selections?
The Adornments - DeRo mentions ‘the Violent Femmes’ and ‘acid’ when describing this Berwyn group, and both are accurate (nay, necessary) components to describing the weird, lo-fi phychobilly punk currently bouncing out of my speakers. Is he saying “Foie gras dog?!”
Airiel - Well-produced, billowy shoegaze from Brigeport. Nice call on these guys, I feel like I’m drifting through a multi-colored indie rock/psychedelia dreamscape.
Cool Kids - In case you’d been under a rock for the past 10 months, you’ve already heard Chicago’s finest throwback-to-the-late-80’s hip hop export. Not exactly “up ‘n’ coming” anymore in our minds (c’mon, they’ve rocked for Barack), but DeRo’s description of “two turntables and a microphone” was kinda cute.
Kid Sister - Gotta say the same thing…when you’re playing MTV’s TRL, no matter how passe that show may be, you ain’t “up-and-coming” any longer.
Head of Femur - Sing it one more time, Sam…these guys have been “the next Big Thing” for a couple of years now, and without a major bite from the critical collective, the ‘buzz’ is more like a sleepy lull.
Ezra Furman - Finally, another truly up ‘n’ coming artist and local label Minty Fresh’s first decent signing in years. Furman’s way-beyond-his-years lyrical perspective grabs you, but his faithful nods to the forefathers of folk rock will keep you listening.
Matthew Santos - Young Santos has made a name (and, ostensibly, a living) lending his voice to a Lupe Fiasco track, but his whimsical bedroom folk has its own sophisticated merit to stand on.
Tom Schraeder - (full disclosure: I am part of Tom’s management team) The youngest artist ever to play the Schubas “Practice Space” residency, Schraeder is riding a wave of overwhelmingly positive press love for his huge voice (and even huger hootenanny-style ensemble, His Ego) right down to Austin’s SXSW festival in a couple of weeks.
The Sapiens - Frenetic, rock/punk with a Moog played by guys in suits. I think I have to see this one live to get it.
Team Band - We played with these guys once, and the Art Brut comparisons are totally valid. But seriously, who doesn’t want to have a bit of fun injected into their rocknroll?
