Let’s get right to Superfangs’ picks this week:
MP3: Jean Grae and 9th Wonder- 8th from Jeanius (2008, Blacksmith)
Jean’s sharp, tight flow over classic 9th Wonder Fruity Loops production. Few in the game make true hip hop as good as this.
MP3: The Raveonettes- Aly, Walk With Me from Lust Lust Lust (February 19th
Vice)
Once touted “rock saviors” bring charged guitars with Western embellishments over a trip-hop beat. Sorry for the Vice advertisement at the end. At least it’s in a British accent - or is that Danish?
MP3: Murder By Death- Fuego from Red Of Tooth And Claw (March 4th, Vagrant)
Dark and horny post-rock country. Yee-ha for hipsters.
MP3: The Big Sleep - Pinkies from The Big Sleep (February 19th, Frenchkiss)
This rockin’, shoe gazin’ track has been making the rounds on the internet the past couple months. It’s remained near the top of our playlist and we look forward to catching them here in Chicago post-SXSW.
MP3: Human Bell- The Singing Trees from Human Bell (January 29th, Thrill
Jockey)
Instrumental psychedelic guitar goodness. Despite the distorted quality, I think you can hear a bit of the Lungfish influence on this track.
MP3: Grand Archives- Torn Blue Foam Couch from The Grand Archives (February
19th, Sub Pop)
Refresh my memory, why did Mat Brooke leave Band of Horses? Regardless, a great Beach Boys inspired tune.
MP3: Sunny Day Sets Fire- Stranger from Stranger/Remix EP (February 26th,
iamsound)
Catchy experimental pop from the UK really has nothing to do with Sunny Day Real Estate or Boy Sets Fire. In addition to this song, the EP will also feature remixes from The Cool Kids and CSS among others.
MP3: A Weather- Oh My Stars from Cove (March 4th, Team Love)
Super quiet and intimate folk tune. Soft as your favorite pillow.
And now for this week’s Smorgasbord Sundae Wafer…
MP3: Head of Femur- Isn’t It A Shame from Great Plains (March 25th, Greyday
Productions)
Quirky indie pop from Chicago by way of Omaha. Catch them at Schubas on April 11th in celebration of their third full-length.
