Chicago’s underground hip hop scene is experiencing a Lupe-fueled resurgence, with unique events like the annual Rhyme Spitters MC battle tournament and quirky sensations like Cool Kids finding new a new audience in the lilly-white hipster community. Cookies & Dirt are the latest comers to the live band hip hop sub genre, and if the stuff on their Myspace page is any indication, they won’t be underground for too long.
The group was formed in 2006 by Chicago MC, poet, and playwright Idris Goodwin (formerly of Farm Crew) and producer Saint Pete (Conglomatron) as an exploration of what live band hip hop could be when backing a smart, socially astute MC. Drummer Corey McCafferty and guitarist Dan Feeley were soon recruited to give the project the stage presence and pulsing energy of a rock band, all of which ratchets up the power of Goodwin’s melody-heavy rhymes. Expect big things from these guys in the very near future.
Cookies & Dirt play this Saturday, 2/9 at The Note (1565 N. Milwaukee) with Sharks, Marvin Tate, and Snd on Snd.
