Several months ago the University of Chicago published a report that lambasted our fair city for not supporting its music industry in the way New York or LA does. While I agree with some points - namely that the city doesn’t provide tax breaks for its music-based initiatives in the same way it’s chosen to pamper the film industry here - I’d also assert that the people who work in music here are the hardiest, most dedicated (and least susceptible to bullshit) types in the industry, precisely because we face less understanding and more bureaucratic red tape to do our work.
So enter a new poll on CMJ.com, which tells us that Chicago is whooping the collective ass of the rest of non-NYC, non-LA America in musicocity awesomeness. Now, I spent four years in the cultural deep freeze of Boston, so I’m not surprised that we slayed those Beaneaters, but New Orleans?! Sweet.
You see, if Chicago had New York/LA-style amenities available to its music industry folks, we’d have a far higher quotient of New York/LA-style douchebags. I’m a-ok with fewer tax breaks if it means fewer “movers and shakers,” get my drift…?
