Superfangs is back with another tasty edition of the Wednesday Smörgåsbord. Check the bottom of the page for the sumptuous Smörgåsbord Sundae Wafer, a sweet treat that comes straight outta Chicago every week.
MP3: Black Mountain- Tyrants from In The Future (January 22nd, Jagjaguwar)
How about prog-rock opera to set the mood? Sure, why not?
MP3: Dead Meadow- What Needs Must Be from Old Growth (February 2nd, Matador Records)
File under ‘if you prefer your dose of heavy rock like your granola.’ Former DC band seems to have gotten a bit more laidback in their recent move to California.
MP3: Colour Revolt- Naked and Red from Plunder, Beg, and Curse (April 1st, Fat Possum Records)
Southern-style post-rock that sticks in your head like pecan pie on your teeth.
MP3: The Whigs- I Never Wanna Go Home from Mission Control (January 22nd, ATO)
Produced and mixed by Rob Schnapf, the new album should only bring more comparisons to Guided By Voices. This isn’t a bad thing.
MP3: Say Hi- Northwestern Girls from The Wishes And The Glitch (February 5th, The Rebel Group)
Matured enough to drop to ‘To Your Mom’ from their name, but still dark and twisty enough to manage this emotive, pop-based musing.
MP3: Mountain Goats- Sax Rohmer #1 from Heretic Pride (February 19th, 4AD)
John Darnielle seems to depart somewhat from his typically autobiographic style with a loosely historic fiction tale.
MP3: Hot Chip- Made In The Dark from Made In The Dark (February 5th, DFA/Astralwerks)
I prefer Maritime’s gritty, salt-stains-on-your-windshield take on Hot Chip’s melancholy.
MP3: Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin- Glue Girls from Pershing (April 8th, Polyvinyl)
Leading up to their sophomore release, I’ve seen many references to Elliot Smith or Matthew Sweet. Bah, I’m not going there. A solid pop number.
And now for this week’s Smörgåsbord Sundae Wafer…
MP3: Ultra Sonic Edukators- Atomic Bombit from Bad Blood EP (November 2007)
We have to admit that we hold stigmas with any band that chooses to misspell their name with funky k’s or z’s….but these Chicago-based students of the mid-90’s Brit pop explosion (think Blur, Supergrass, Happy Mondays) is in the midst of a month-long residency at Schubas, so we decided that we needed to get over ourselves. Good thing.
