A tale of two Jacks

January 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Dude, is Jack Johnson seriously headlining the first day of Coachella over Jack White’s/Brendan Benson’s Raconteurs? AND The reunited Verve? What am I missing? I know I don’t listen to a whole ton of modern radio, so my reference point may be skewed, but Coachella’s reputation as a hotbed of all things indie seems to be in jeopardy. I haven’t been since 2005, but maybe the coked out reports I’m getting from the front lines indicate a major shift towards good time party and away from artistic relevance.

Somebody please prove me wrong here…but in the meantime, get excited to see the Raconteurs. They’re one of the few quasi-experimental pop bands that translate well in the festival setting, so I’m personlly thrilled that they’ll be playing on the big stage at Coachella. Why? Check out this video I shot on a shitty point ‘n’ shoot camera from backstage at Lollapalooza ‘06:

I like some pretty bad music and even I don’t listen to Jack Johnson. That said, Coachella is, first and foremost, a party. And if the past few years prove anything, it’s a really good party. You hope to be surprised and blown away by someone new and you expect to be disappointed by an artist you like.

Call me shallow, but I wouldn’t go to the desert for 3 days of artistic relevance. But throw in a house with 6 friends, a swimming pool and a few bands I adore - and hot damn. That’s a weekend.

Lame, lame, lame … no matter how big the party. I have to admit I wouldn’t mind seeing Love and Rockets, though, since I haven’t seen them since they played here with The Pixies in ‘88 or ‘89.

My problem is more about repetition. I spotted at least 10 acts I’ve seen at Coachella before–including Kraftwerk. Roger F’ing Waters!?! WTF?! Gilmour, please…
