Please welcome aboard young Superfangs, my shiny new Wednesday Smörgåsbord correspondent. He’ll be scouring the Interweb from his secret headquarters somewhere in the Midwest, digging up nugget after nugget of mp3 goodness for your skull every Hump Day.
MP3: Aloha - Body Buzz from Light Works (December 2007, Polyvinyl)
Aloha followed up 2006’s much-hyped prog-pop album Some Echoes in December with an EP that went mostly unnoticed. We dig the more melodic, stripped down sound
MP3: The Dodos - Fools from Visiter (March 18th, Frenchkiss Records)
San Francisco buzz band hopes to show it can craft an album to match the energy of their live show.
MP3: Magnetic Fields - Too Drunk To Dream from Distortion (January 15th, Nonesuch)
Um, well. Relationship angst never sounded so bubbly?
MP3: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Baltimore from Real Emotional Trash (March 18th, Matador Records)
Dude keeps kickin’ out the whimsy jams and we’re not complaining. We haven’t been big fans of the Jicks live, but this track gives us hope.
MP3: Ladyhawk - I Don’t Always Know What You’re Saying from Shots (March 4th, Jagjaguwar)
Hey look, Canadian indie rock— and it’s only a quartet!
MP3: Haram - Drescher Clock from Drescher (November 2007, Lovitt Records)
Harkens late 90s post-hardcore without the pomade.
MP3: Halou - It Will All Make Sense In The Morning from Sawtooth (due out later this month, Vertebrae)
After 2006’s Wholeness & Separation, Halou seems to be heading a bit more rock, a bit less electronic. Hard to say with a track that clocks in under 3 minutes, but they seem to have avoided the pitfalls often associated with the genre.
MP3: Bob Mould The Silence Between Us from Direct Line (February 5th, Anti)
I could listen to Bob Mould’s voice on repeat for days. Plus he’s got Brendan from Fugazi playing drums?! Would have made us cream our 15 year old selves.
MP3: Chris Walla - Sing Again from Field Manual (January 29th, Barsuk)
Wonder if the border patrol offered any production advice… Or erased part of his confiscated hard drive.
