I walked into a Dunkin’ Donuts last week and was floored to see the Christmas donuts out on the racks, hear the schmaltzy holiday tunes on the stereo, and walk away with a Styrofoam cup adorned with green and orange (?) Christmas trees. Is it seriously that time again? I feel like I was just whipping around Grant Park on golf carts during Lollapalooza.

Alright, fine, I’ll accept the impending doom of another Chicago winter by focusing on the one part of the holidays that always makes the whole charade worthwhile: otherwise occupied or indifferent people opening their hearts and wallets to take care of their less-fortunate brethren. Luckily for music fans, this usually means some really tasty nuggets from our favorite artists, set out for us buffet-style and all benefitting something we can feel good about.

That’s why I’m pointing you all to Causes 1, a collection of exclusive tracks from some of the heaviest hitters in independent music that 100% benefits the fight against genocide in Darfur through the efforts of Doctors Without Borders, Human Rights Watch, and Oxfam America. Check out this track list and tell me you won’t buy this album when it hits iTunes tomorrow:

  • Animal Collective - Safer (Exclusive Live Version)
  • The Black Keys - Stay All Night (Exclusive Chulahoma Session)
  • Bloc Party - Rhododendrons
  • Bright Eyes - Coat Check Dream Song (Exclusive Live Version)
  • Cornelius - Wataridori 2 (Exclusive Version)
  • David Sylvian - Late Night Shopping (Exclusive Chris Vrenna Remix)
  • Death Cab For Cutie - World Shut Your Mouth (Rare Julian Cope Cover)
  • The (International) Noise Conspiracy - Washington Bullets
  • The Cure - The Walk (Exclusive Live Version)
  • The Shins - Turn On Me (Exclusive Clint Mansell Remix)
  • Spoon - Rhthm & Soul (Exclusive Middle Version)
  • Teargas & Plateglass - One Day Across the Valley
  • Thievery Corporation - The Passing Stars feat. Pam Bricker
  • Travis - Gimme Some Truth (Exclusive John Lennon Cover)

So yeah, as Not Shocking said in their preview of Causes 1, we’re talking about geno-fucking-cide here. Nothing to sniff at, and everything to contribute to the fight against.
