Schubas in Chicago has our hearts and minds already with its consistently excellent booking, comfortable, unpretentious atmosphere, and friendly barstaff (always at the ready to fill an empty glass). Every January, however, the place outdoes itself with the annual Tomorrow Never Knows festival - it’s a 5-day, $55 cornucopia of the best and brightest music from the past year and the most tantalizing new talent on the radar. This week’s announcement of the TNK 2008 lineup has us just as excited to get through that pesky holiday season…

Wednesday, 1/16: John Vanderslice, The M’s, Young Galaxy

Thursday, 1/17: Bobby Conn, NOMO, Hylozyoists

Friday, 1/18: Cloud Cult, Illinois, Wax Fang

Saturday, 1/19: White Williams, Omehga Watts, Ecstatic Sunshine

Sunday, 1/20: The Walkmen, White Rabbits, White Denim

I’m most interested in Bobby Conn, who has fascinated me every since he turned the weirdo tables on me in an interview last year for the Onion A.V. Club; White Williams, the hippest dance-pop indie wunderkind to hit the blogs since Zach Condon; and White Rabbits, our former neighbors down I-55 who never disappoint with intricate arrangements that bely a mastery of simple pop songwriting.
