It’s the day of hump once again, and frankly I’m still pretty groggy from the weekend. What better way to get the blood pumping than to feast on some new music?
A good friend and trusted music recommender (is there a more eloquent term?) came back from the Airwaves Festival this past weekend raving about Montreal prog-jazz outfit Plants and Animals. I checked them out, and there are some high-level, technically superior and wildly mindbending jams to be had. I hear the live show is really where it’s at, but they sound freaky and they look freaky, and that’s enough for me.

Film School is currently on the road with their Cure-Joy Division-Interpol-My Bloody Valentine swirl of sharp, sweeping rock, promoting their latest Beggars Group release, Hideout. Check out 2 cuts from the album and watch for the tour, with Land of Talk, to roll through your town.
I don’t know about you, but I’m usually wary of old famous dudes getting together with other old famous dudes to make records. Mick Jones from The Clash and Tony James from Generation X have been buds for years and finally found the time and/or inclination to hit the studio together. The result is Carbon/Silicon, the new release is The Last Post, and the sound is just as unruly, unapologetic, and uncouth as you’d expect from these guys.

Cass McCombs recently relocated to Chicago from California, so I’m personally looking forward to more opportunities to hear his angular take on the kiss-of-death label of “singer-songwriter.” Drop the Writ, his recent release on Domino, is far more layered than his hauntingly sparse debut, A (the album that really caught my attention a couple of years ago), but the threadbare honesty and veiled lyrical references to literature, politics, social unrest, personal strife, and communication breakdowns remain my favorite part of his work.
