Every Monday night, the dirtbag dancehall we know and love as the Empty Bottle opens its doors to all kinds of cheap people, who take advantage of the lack of cover charge to get absolutely shit canned on $1.25 PBRs. The hipsterati mix with locals from the eclectic Ukrainian Village, where the venue is located, and the inevitable out-of-place guy looking for skint beers (in this case, it was two dudes dressed to the nines in white pimp suits with matching canes). The difference between Mondays at the Bottle and Any Damn Night of the Week at your average dive is that you’re usually in for a musical treat from a national buzz act like The One AM Radio. I’ll admit - I went because I was covering the show for the online edition of a fancy music rag, but I’m really glad I did. Hrishikesh Hirway is the man behind the Radio, and he’s one of those rare rock kids who is truly a student of music. It’s easy to see that nothing is uncalculated in his indie electronic folk pop, and a band that includes a violinist and a dude playing xylophone and trumpet allows his songs to take on a sort of blanketed wash effect through heavy sonic layering and the building of texture over melody. I highly recommend picking up the latest release, This Too Will Pass (Dangerbird), and catching them when they pass through your corner of the world.
